Do specific Sudoku puzzles need particular solving techniques?

Sometimes you'll come across a puzzle that is said to require a particular techique to solve it. But in reality, many puzzles can be solved via more than one route, and often using different techniques. Very few puzzles require a particular technique to the extent that it cannot be solved using some other. So to say a puzzle requires a particular technique is often a mistake.

What it usually means, is that if you rank the various solving techniques into some subjective order of difficulty, and then attempt to solve a puzzle first using the easier techniques, and only moving onto the harder techniques when the easier ones don't help, then the puzzle will use the technique that it is said to require. But, if your solving techniques are ranked in a different order than the puzzle creator's, then you may still solve it without using that specific technique.
